Some historians of Jiu-Jitsu say that the origins of “the gentle art” can be traced back to India, where it was practiced by Buddhist Monks. Concerned with selfdefense, these monks created techniques based upon principles of balance and leverage and a system of manipulating the body in a way that one could avoid relying upon strength or weapons. With the expansion of Buddhism, Jiu-Jitsu spread from Southeast Asia to China, finally arriving in Japan where it developed and gained further popularity. Near the end of the 19th century, some Jiu-Jitsu masters emigrated from Japan to other continents, teaching the martial arts as well as taking part in fights and competitions. Esai Maeda Koma, also known as “Conde Koma,” was one such master.

After traveling with a troupe who fought in various countries in Europe and the Americas, Koma arrived in Brazil in 1915, settling in Belem do Pará the next year, where he met a man named Gastão Gracie. The father of eight children, among them five boys and three girls, Gastão became a Jiu-Jitsu enthusiast and brought his oldest son, Carlos, to learn from the Japanese master. For a naturally frail fifteen-year old Carlos Gracie, Jiu-Jitsu became a method not simply for fighting, but for personal improvement. At nineteen, he moved to Rio de Janeiro with his family and began teaching and fighting. In his travels, Carlos would teach classes and prove the efficiency of the art by beating opponents who were physically stronger. In 1925, he returned to Rio and opened the first school, known as the “Academia Gracie de Jiu-Jitsu.” Since then, Carlos began sharing his knowledge with his brothers, adapting and refining the techniques to the naturally weaker characteristics of his family. Carlos also taught them his philosophies of life and his concepts of natural nutrition. Eventually, Carlos became a pioneer in creating a special diet for athletes, the “Gracie Diet,” which transformed Jiu-Jitsu into a term synonymous with health.

Having created an efficient self-defense system, Carlos Gracie saw in the art a way to become more tolerant, respectful, and self-confident. In order to prove Jiu-Jitsu’s superiority over other martial arts, Carlos challenged the greatest fighters of his time. He also managed the fighting careers of his brothers. Because they were fighting and defeating opponents fifty or sixty pounds heavier, the Gracies quickly gained recognition and prestige. Attracted to this new market created by Jiu-Jitsu, many Japanese practitioners came to Rio, but none were able to establish schools as successful as the Gracies. This was due to the fact that the Japanese stylists were more focused on takedowns and throws, while the Jiu-Jitsu practiced by the Gracies had more sophisticated ground fighting and submission techniques. Carlos and his brothers changed and adapted the techniques in such a way that it completely altered the complexion of international Jiu-Jitsu principles. These techniques were so distinctive to Carlos and his brothers that the sport became attached to a national identity, and is now commonly known as “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,” practiced by martial artists all over the world, including Japan.

With the creation of an official governing body to oversee the administration of the sport, including competition rules and the grading system, the era of sport Jiu-Jitsu competitions was started. Today, Jiu-Jitsu is a highly-organized sport, with an International Federation as well as a Brazilian National Confederation, both founded by Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Through his work with the Confederation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Carlos Gracie Jr. contributed to the growth of the sport by holding some of the first organized competitions. Currently, the IBJJF and CBJJ holds competitions in Brazil, the United States, Europe, and Asia, realizing Carlos’ original dream of spreading Jiu-Jitsu around the world.

LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE
4901 E. Carson St.
Long Beach, CA 90806

Long Beach City College is one of the largest of the 114 community colleges in the state of California. Established in 1927, the college has been at the heart of the community providing educational programs with a commitment to excellence in student learning in a culturally diverse and vibrant environment.

Boasting over 25,000 students, Long Beach City College encompasses state of the art, technologyrich learning environments, a broad range of academic and career technical instructional programs, strong community partnerships, and economic and workforce development initiatives that prepare students to be successful in the 21st century.

Apple Inc. recently presented Long Beach City College with one of 10 grants nationally for its extensive commitment to computer technology.

Located in one of Long Beach’s most beautiful and prestigious areas, the college is conveniently located only minutes away from the Long Beach Airport, malls, restaurants, and some of the finest hotels in Southern California.

With four schools to house its instructional programs, Long Beach City College provides program offerings in Career and Technical Education, Language Arts and Communication, Social Sciences and the Arts, and Health, Science & Mathematics. Founded as Long Beach Junior College, the college started at Woodrow Wilson High School until the 1933 earthquake which destroyed the building. Classes were held outside in tents at neighboring Recreation Park until the college moved to the site of its present-day Liberal Arts Campus at Carson Street and Clark Avenue in 1935.

From its earliest days, the college established traditions that are alive today, such as the mascot, Ole, and the team name, the Vikings. A student newspaper, yearbook, social services, and intramural programs were launched in the first year. Academic honors included having a library that was viewed as a national model and the state’s top junior college debate team. Athletic honors included Southern California championships in wrestling, baseball, men’s and women’s swimming and the state championship in men’s basketball, all during the 1928-29 school year.

The college grew rapidly during and after World War II and added the Pacific Coast Campus, formerly Hamilton Junior High, in 1949. Numerous extension campuses and satellite locations were added as growth continued in the early 1970s. As a result of state law, the college separated from the Long Beach Unified School District and became the independent Long Beach Community College District with its own locally elected Board of Trustees.

Changes in the workplace, and in the community’s demographics, brought about rapid changes in the mid1980s. The influx of Southeast Asian refugees led to extensive courses in English as a Second Language and other programs to assist and acculturate this burgeoning population. A later wave of amnesty applicants ensured that ESL remained one of the college’s core programs and garnered awards as a state model.

Computers entered nearly every instructional program necessitating the acquisition of new equipment and revisions to the curriculum. Apple Computer presented Long Beach City In 1987, the college completed a decade of negotiations with the City of Long Beach to acquire the neighboring Veterans Stadium.

Through the sale of surplus land to another neighbor, McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), the college was able to finance the $3 million in renovations required to upgrade the facility.

Within the last decade, the college has celebrated completion of a wide range of new construction projects and building modernizations at both campuses. The passage of the Measure E bond in 2002, and its extension in 2008, by the overwhelming majority of voters in the Long Beach Community College District has provided $660 million in local funds and qualified the District to receive an additional $60 million in state matching grants. The resulting building program has provided new facilities and modern learning environments to support new programs, allowing Long Beach City College to prepare its students to meet the changing demands of the 21st Century.

Long Beach City College continues to have a deserved reputation for excellence for its instructional programs and its graduates achieve tremendous success after transferring to four-year colleges or entering the workforce. The college’s reputation is further enhanced by key partnerships and economic development initiatives. With its many accomplishments, Long Beach City College is well-positioned to build on its tradition of success in serving the community for generations to come.

IN MEMORY OF CARLOS GRACIE, HELIO GRACIE, CARLSON GRACIE AND ROLLS GRACIE.
THE BIGGEST LEGENDS OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU – WORLD JIU-JITSU FESTIVAL OCTOBER 5TH AND 6TH, 2019
LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE CA

IN MEMORY OF CARLOS GRACIE

He was taught judo by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese immigrant to Brazil who was then a 4th dan kodokan judoka. Carlos Gracie opened the first BJJ School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1925. The Academia Gracie, a dream that became reality. Carlos then passed the teachings on to his brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., Jorge, and Hélio, marking the beginning of the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Those in attendance will learn all there is to know about the man who created Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which has become Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

IN MEMORY OF HELIO GRACIE

Hélio Gracie was a Brazilian martial artist who, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Until his death, Gracie was the only living 10th degree grand master of that system, and is widely considered as one of the first sports heroes in Brazilian history; he was named Black Belt magazine’s Man of the Year in 1997. According to one of his most notable opponents, Masahiko Kimura, Gracie held the rank of 6th dan in Judo. Those who attend will learn everything about Helio Gracie, view an excellent expo of exclusive photos, and never before seen photos of the Gracie family.

IN MEMORY OF CARLSON GRACIE

Carlson Gracie was the oldest son of Carlos Gracie, recognized as a one the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Carlson began learning the gentle-art from his father and his uncle at age five. When Carlson was 17 years old he won the Campeonato Carioca de Jiu-Jitsu, Rio de Janeiro’s first state championship. At age 18 Carlson had his first professional fight against Judo champion Sakai, which ended in a draw. However, Carlson’s fame and popularity really began at age 23 when he successfully avenged the defeat of his mentor Helio Gracie by beating one of Brazil’s most renowned fighters, Waldemar Santana. Carlson reigned supreme for nearly 30 years, throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s in no holds barred matches taking on one challenge and fight after another.

IN MEMORY OF ROLLS GRACIE

Rolls Gracie was the son of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu founder Carlos Gracie, although he was raised for the most part by his uncle, Helio Gracie, at Carlos’ request (as did most of Carlos’ children). Rolls started practicing Jiu-Jitsu as a toddler, and began competing as a child, winning every single major trophy there was to earn at the time. He was the first of the Gracies to actively seek competitions in Freestyle, Greco Roman and Sambo wrestling as well as Judo. First cross training by the hands of Judoka Osvaldo Alves in Brazil, later seeking 5 time US Wrestling champ Bob Anderson to improve his grappling stand. He also trained Olympic Gymnastics and surfing in order to improve his athleticism. He is considered one of the greatest Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belts of all time, to this day.
